Donald Trump’s plan to exact revenge on Republican lawmakers in Indiana got off to a rough start.
Late last year, 21 incumbent Republican state senators voted against Trump’s mid-decade redistricting push in Indiana, handing Trump a rare defeat in a reliably red state.
Trump lashed out on Truth Social at the time, saying that the lawmakers should be “ashamed” of themselves and that “every one of these people should be primaried.”
In response, several MAGA-aligned groups poured money into the races to unseat the lawmakers who defied Trump. Despite the influx of cash to the Trump-backed candidates in the primary, some still appear to be struggling to gain traction.
Eight out of the twenty-one state senators who defied Trump are up for re-election, and seven have Trump-backed primary challengers.
At a Turning Point USA rally last Wednesday for Brenda Wilson, the Trump-backed primary challenger to state Sen. Greg Goode, organizers had lawn signs and printed out fliers. At the same time, a Spotify playlist titled “Trump Rally” blared on a speaker.
Only four people showed up, three of whom were part of the same family, NOTUS reported.
Another Turning Point USA rally featuring conservative activist Scott Pressler late last month drew just a few dozen attendees, Politico reported.

“This is not an ideological battle, it’s about allegiance to Trump,” Marc Short, a Republican adviser who served as Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, told NOTUS. “It’s a lot of carnage for very low return.”
The primary elections are scheduled for Tuesday, May 5.
