Jayland Walker, the 25-year-old Black man who was fatally shot by police in Ohio last month had 46 gunshot wounds or grazed injuries on his body, according to an autopsy report.
“The autopsy determined that Jayland had 46 gunshot wound entrances or graze injuries,” Lisa Kohler, the chief medical examiner for Summit County said at a press conference.
Walker’s heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidney and intestine were damage by the 15 gunshot wounds he received to his upper body. He also received 17 wounds to the upper legs and pelvis, damaging the iliac artery and several bones. He also had one wound to the face, fracturing his jaw, according to Kohler.
Five wounds entered his body from the back and 41 entered from the front and sides.
“The photographic record shows more than 46 labeled wounds because there are exit wounds, bullets beneath the skin and abrasions that were numbered for the purpose of identifying specific injuries,” Kohler said.
A toxicology report was negative for alcohol and other drugs.
Walker was killed by Akron police officers in a hail of bullets last month following a vehicle and foot chase. It began when officers attempted to stop Walker’s car for traffic and equipment violations. He refused to stop which resulted in officers chasing him.
Soon after the chase began the sound of a shot was heard from the car and a transportation department camera captured what appeared to be a muzzle flash coming from the vehicle, according to CBS News.
Chief Steve Mylett said the shot changed the nature of the case from “a routine traffic stop to now a public safety issue.”
A few minutes later the car slowed and Walker jumped out. As he ran away several police officers fired their weapons killing him.
Officers found a gun inside the car but Walker was unarmed when he was shot.
