Seventh Memphis police officer suspended after Tyre Nichols’ death.

Tennessee Republicans pass bill to undo reforms put in place after Tyre Nichols' fatal beating by officers

A seventh Memphis police officer has been disciplined after the death of Tyre Nichols.

The Department said in a statement on Monday that the unidentified officer was ‘relieved of duty’ pending an internal investigation. The department did not say what role the unidentified officer played in the incident.

Earlier on Monday the department announced that another officer identified as Preston Hemphill,26, was relieved of duty as well. Hemphill was the officer seen on bodycam video tasing Nichols during his initial stop and said he hoped officers “stomp” Nichols’ ass.

This brought the total number of Memphis officers who have been disciplined to seven, including the five Black officers who were fired and charged with second-degree murder and other charges in connection to Nichols’ fatal beating.

Also on Monday, three Memphis Fire Department officials who responded to the scene were fired after an investigation found that they failed to provide adequate medical care at the scene.

“Their actions or inactions on the scene that night do not meet the expectations of the Memphis Fire Department and are not reflective of the outstanding service the men and women of the Memphis Fire Department provide daily in our community,” the department said.
