Donald Trump offered a full-throated endorsement of data centers on Monday, arguing that communities that do not want them will “end up being backwards and poor.”

“The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor. If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The good news is that there are plenty of other places that want them. If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame. China could not be happier with this anti-data center movement. Actually, they can’t believe it is happening!” he added.

Data centers are facing bipartisan backlash. An Economist/YouGov poll conducted August 21-24 found that just 24 percent of Americans have a positive view of data centers while 47 percent have a negative view. The poll also found that 47 percent of 2024 Trump voters opposed having a new data center built in their community, compared with 35 percent who supported such a project.

The issue of data centers has become so toxic for Republicans in key swing states in this year’s midterms that the National Republican Senatorial Committee warns Democrats are making data centers the “centerpiece” of their campaign to target candidates in these states, such as Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio).

“If he loses and data centers get the blame, politicians across the country will take notice — and they will not go near the next one,” a NRSC memo obtained by Axios reads. “This has become a sleeper issue for the entire election cycle.”
