A man was arrested Tuesday after he broke into the Colorado Supreme Court building and fired multiple shots inside, authorities say.
Colorado State Police said the incident took place around 1:15 a.m. after a two-car crash outside the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center in downtown Denver where the court is housed.
A person involved in the crash pointed a gun at the other driver. The armed individual then shot out a window on the east side of the judicial center and entered the building.
Inside, the armed suspect came in contact with an unarmed Colorado State Patrol security guard and demanded access to other parts of the building.
“The individual obtained keys from the security guard and proceeded into other parts of the building and accessed an unknown number of floors,” state police said.
The suspect fired multiple gunshots inside before calling 911 and voluntarily surrendering around 3 a.m.
No injuries were reported, but the building sustained, “significant and extensive damage.” The suspect was taken to a local hospital to be examined.
The incident came weeks after a Colorado Supreme Court ruling removed former President Donald Trump from the state ballot under the 14th Amendment due to his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Authorities say preliminary investigation “confirmed a high probability” that the incident is not connected to “recent threats against the Colorado Supreme Court Justices.”
The justices have received multiple threats after the ruling. The FBI said last month that they’re working with police in Denver to investigate.
“We will vigorously pursue investigations of any threat or use of violence committed by someone who uses extremist views to justify their actions regardless of motivation,” an FBI spokesperson said.
