Journalist Bob Woodward says he considers former President Donald Trump to be a “threat to democracy.”
“Trump was the wrong man for the job. I realize now, two years later, all of the Jan. 6 insurrection, leads me to the conclusion that he’s not just the wrong man for the job, but he’s dangerous, and he is a threat to democracy, and he’s a threat to the presidency because he doesn’t understand the core obligations that come with that office,” Woodward said during an appearance on “CBS Sunday Morning.
Woodward has compiled his 16 phone calls, 8 hours of conversations and 20 one-on-one interviews with Donald Trump into an audiobook, “The Trump Tapes,” slated to be released on Oct. 25.
In the interview on Sunday, Woodward said he regrets not asking more questions when Trump refused to comment on whether he plans to leave the White House if he lost the November 2020 presidential election.
“It’s the only time he had no comment,” Woodward said. “And this, of course, was months before his loss. And I kind of slapped myself a little bit: Why didn’t I follow up on that a little bit more?”
Trump was impeached for incitement of insurrection after his supporters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 to prevent the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, based on a lie by the former president and his allies that the election was stolen. Trump was subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 committee last week for documents and testimony related to the attack.
Despite this, the former president hinted at running for office again during a rally in Robstown, Texas on Saturday.
