A panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Friday tried to rewrite the history of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack to cast the rioters as “heroes” who put their lives at risk to protect people who were being attacked by police.
“The injustices are breathtaking, and that’s why our country is in such turmoil and people are upset,” Right-wing radio host Sandy Rios said. “And that the real heroes, I think, and it doesn’t mean no — let’s just say some of our real heroes were there on January the 6th, actually putting their lives on the line when they saw the police attacking the people.”
The mob of Trump supporters that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 violently assaulted police officers, injuring more than 100. Officer Brian Sicknick died from injuries sustained during the attack and several others resigned.
At least four officers who responded to the attack at the Capitol have died by suicide.
Nearly 1300 people have been charged so far for their role in the Capitol attack. Nearly 452 have been charged with assaulting a police officer and 89 have pleaded guilty.
