Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Tuesday announced that she will retire from the Senate at the end of 2024.
“I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends,” Feinstein said in a statement on Tuesday, according to NBC.
Feinstein, 89, is the oldest sitting senator and the longest-serving senator from California. She was first elected to the Senate in 1992.
Feinstein has been under pressure in recent years to resign and allow a new generation of leaders to take over. She was also facing questions about her metal ability to serve for the last few years.
Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Adam Schiff have already announced plans to run for the seat and other Democrats are likely to join the race as well. California has a jungle primary system which could see two Democrats making it to the runoff elections in November.
