A New York judge ordered Eric Trump to testify in a fraud probe before the elections this November.
The New York Attorney General office is looking into whether the Trump organisation fraudulently represented the value of its assets to get more favorable loans and tax benefits. Eric Trump has overseen the day-to-day operations of the Trump Organization while his father is serving in the White House, Politico reports.
Eric Trump’s lawyers sought to have the interview push back to a date after the election so as to no impinge on his travel schedule or risk having the deposition used as political weapon against his father.
But Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron was not persuaded by these arguments since the legal system is not “bound by timelines of the national election.” The judge ordered Eric to undergo deposition on October 7.
“The court’s order today makes clear that no one is above the law, not even an organization or an individual with the name Trump,” New York Attorney General Tish James said in a statement.
