Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) told staff members he could end up on the Democratic ticket in the 2028 presidential election, and it was not well received.

According to a New Yorker report, Fetterman told staff he thought he could be the vice-presidential nominee on the Democratic ticket, prompting questions about his state of mind, given how unpopular he is within the Democratic Party.

“Almost all of us had our jaws on the floor, like, ‘Are you out of your f*cking mind? You don’t do your job, you can’t raise any money, and your entire party hates you,” a person who was in the room told the outlet.

This was Fetterman’s more reasonable suggestion after appearing to dismiss the idea of becoming president, according to staffers.

Fetterman has angered the Democratic base with his unquestioning support for Israel, backing Trump’s war with Iran, and his close relationship with Donald Trump even as the president remains historically unpopular.

This week, Fetterman was the only Democratic senator to oppose a war powers resolution that would force Trump to withdraw from the deeply unpopular war with Iran, which has raised gas prices for Americans. The senator has also come out in support of Trump’s unpopular $1 billion ballroom and renovating the reflecting pool, declaring in a Fox News segment that Democrats should ‘get over their TDS’ and back the projects.

Fetterman’s net approval rating among Pennsylvania Democrats has dropped 108 points since 2023, from plus 68 to minus 40, according to CNN. In recent weeks, Republicans have reportedly tried to convince Fetterman to switch parties. He has insisted he will remain a Democrat.
