Former swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Klete Keller has pleaded guilty to charges relating the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
Keller, 38 pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding in D.C. District Court on Wednesday. The charge is a felony that carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, according to WUSA 9.
He was arrested in January and charged with seven crimes relating to the Jan. 6 insurrection including civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, impeding passage through the Capitol grounds or buildings and disorderly and disruptive conduct in a Capitol building.
However, prosecutors dropped six of the charges be faced and recommends a prison sentence of 15-21 months in exchange for Keller cooperating with investigators while he awaits sentencing.
Keller was easily identified by members of the swimming community because he was wearing a US Olympic Team jacket with “USA” printed on the back and down the sleeves.
His Olympic jacket was also what led authorities to positively ID him.
“PERSON 1 can be seen standing in the Rotunda still wearing the dark-colored USA jacket, which also appears to bear a Nike logo on the front right side and a red and white Olympic patch on the front left side,” the criminal complaint filed against Keller reads.
Keller won two gold medals in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic games in the 4x200m relay after taking silver in the event in 2000.
More than 600 people have been charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot and, so far, 75 have pleaded guilty.
