Kamala Harris leads Trump in IOWA: Poll

A new poll out of Iowa shows Vice President Kamala Harris has taken the lead over Donald Trump days before the presidential election.

A Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll released on Saturday shows Harris leading Trump by 3 points 47% to 44%, among likely voters.

Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has endorsed Trump, but is still on the ballot in Iowa received 3 percent support.

Meanwhile, another 3 percent said they were undecided and 2 percent did not say which candidate they planned to vote for.

Trump won the state in both 2016 and 2020 and the same poll released in September had him leading Harris by 4 points.

But, Iowa previously voted for Barack Obama twice and once for George W. Bush going into his second term. The Hawkeye State backed Al Gore in the 2000 election.

“It’s hard for anybody to say they saw this coming. She has clearly leaped into a leading position,” pollster J. Ann Selzer told The Des Moines Register.

Harris’ numbers are driven by independents, women and older voters, Selzer noted.

Harris leads Trump by 28 points among independent women voters, 57 percent to 29 percent. Trump leads Harris among independent men, but by a much smaller margin of 10 points, 47%-37%.

Similarly, voters age 65+ also favor Harris, with women breaking heavily for the Democratic nominee. Among women aged 65 and over Harris leads Trump by 35 points, 63 percent to 28 percent. She also leads among men in that age group by 2 points, 47 percent to 45 percent.

The Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll was conducted Oct. 28-31 among 808 likely voters. It has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
