Conservative radio host John Fredericks admitted that Susan Collins’ (R-ME) vote against Todd Blanche for attorney general is simply a “savvy” move to keep her job.

“So Collins knew—no, her team knew. She’s got a very savvy team thats been there a long time,” Fredericks said. “They know that even without her, Blanche has the 50 votes to get confirmed, or 51; I think he’ll get 50. So this was a vote to help her get elected, to help her with Maine voters, but it does nothing to hurt Todd Blanche because he’s already got the votes.”

Collins announced on Tuesday that she will vote “no” on Blanche’s nomination.

Though Collins called Blanche “a capable lawyer,” she said the Department of Justice (DOJ) under his leadership has “become increasingly political.”

She cited several actions, including the creation of the $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund and an IRS deal to shield Trump, his business and family from audits, as evidence that “further eroded the department’s independence” and forms “the basis for my vote to oppose his confirmation.”

On Friday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) announced she would not be supporting Blanche for attorney general. With Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) out indefinitely, and Democrats expected to vote no, a third GOP opponent would have blocked the nomination.

But the other Republican on the fence, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), announced he would back Blanche. With Cassidy’s backing, Blanche has secured the 50th vote needed to clinch the nomination.
