Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) has caved once again and will back Todd Blanche, Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, for attorney general.

“Mr. Blanche is not perfect, and he will tell you this, but the choice is not between perfection and Mr. Blanche,” Cassidy said in remarks on the Senate floor. “It is between Mr. Blanche and another acting attorney general who may not run the department effectively under President Trump and who indeed may not be as good as Mr. Blanche.”

“This is not a referendum on President Trump,” he added. “It is the decision regarding Mr. Blanche and very specific circumstances. All considered, I will vote for Mr. Blanche.”

Cassidy’s vote was crucial for the confirmation of Blanche. Earlier on Friday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) announced she would not be supporting Blanche for attorney general. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) also opposed his nomination. With Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) out indefinitely, and Democrats expected to vote no, a third GOP opponent would have blocked the nomination.

“The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said. “I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case.”

With Cassidy’s backing, Blanche has secured the 50th vote needed to clinch the nomination.
