Payton Gendron, the Buffalo grocery store mass shooter, was removed from the courtroom on Wednesday after a man lunged at him during his sentencing hearing.
The incident occurred during a victim impact statement from Barbara Massey, the sister of Katherine Massey, who was one of the 10 people killed in the attack.
During her statement, a man wearing a gray sweatshirt charged at the gunman but was restrained by officers in court.
Gendron was taken out of the courtroom.
Gendron pleaded guilty in November to one count of domestic act of terrorism motivated by hate, 10 counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder and a weapons possession charge in the mass shooting at Tops Friendly Markets in Buffalo on May 14, 2022.
He is expected to be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
The victims ranged in age from 32 to 86 and were mostly Black. In an online manifesto, Gendron wrote that he chose Tops Friendly Markets because it was in a predominantly Black neighborhood.
