Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is still in a rehabilitation facility and will miss an annual picnic in Kentucky, the senator’s office said in a new statement on Monday.
“I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders. Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky this Saturday,” McConnell said in the statement. “As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon.”
McConnell’s office also included a photo of the senator and his wife in the latest statement, reportedly taken on Sunday, July 26.
An additional statement from the Office of the Attending Physician says that McConnell is continuing a course of physical therapy and rehabilitation and that he is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.”
“Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls,” the statement reads.
McConnell,84, was rushed to the hospital on June 14 after he was found unconscious at his home.
After weeks of silence, McConnell released a statement on July 12; he revealed that he was hospitalized after falling and losing consciousness.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia,” he said in the statement.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) has repeatedly told reporters that he has been left in the dark about McConnell’s health. Earlier this month, Beshear told journalist Katie Couric on her podcast that he had received two calls suggesting that the lawmaker died while he was in the hospital.
