Sen. Ben Sasse rips GOP colleagues planning to challenge Electoral College vote certification in Congress.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse ripped the “ambitious politicians” in the Republican Party who are planning a “dangerous ploy” to challenge Electoral College votes in Congress on January 6.

In an open letter to constituents on Thursday, Sasse wrote: “I will not be participating in a project to overturn the election–and I have been urging my colleagues also to reject this dangerous ploy.”

“Let’s be clear what is happening here: We have a bunch of ambitious politicians who think there’s a quick way to tap into the president’s populist base without doing any real, long-term damage,” Sasse wrote. “But they’re wrong – and this issue is bigger than anyone’s personal ambitions. Adults don’t point a loaded gun at the heart of legitimate self-government,” he added.

The Nebraska senator said in private none of his colleagues are alleging that the election results are fraudulent instead, they are worried about how they would look to supporters of Donald Trump.

Sasse’s letter comes one day after Missouri Senator Josh Hawley said he would be challenging the results of the election in the Senate because some states did not follow their own election laws and that Big Tech interfered on behalf of Biden.

But, as Sasse wrote in his letter, “all the clever arguments and rhetorical gymnastics in the world won’t change the fact that this January 6th effort is designed to disenfranchise millions of Americans simply because they voted for someone in a different party.”

Hawley joining House Republicans’ in their effort to overthrow democracy means Congress will be debating on an objection for the third time since 1887. All this is because of Trump’s dubious claims of widespread voter fraud that many Senators have already dismissed and the courts have thrown out.
