Donald Trump said Wednesday he would “absolutely” take the stand and testify in his own defense at a potential trial.
“I look forward to testifying. At trial, I’ll testify. Because that’s just like Russia, Russia, Russia,” Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.
Trump faces criminal charges in New York for alleged hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election and in Florida for alleged mishandling of classified documents and obstruction of justice. The former president also faces federal charges in Washington D.C and state charges in Georgia stemming from his efforts to remain in power after he lost the 2020 presidential election.
Trump dismissed Hewitt’s question about how he plans to defend himself when prosecutors ask if he instructed his employees at Mar-a-Lago to move boxes of classified.
“I’m not answering that question for you, but I’m totally covered under the law,” Trump said.
Though Trump says he plans to testify it is unlikely his attorneys would allow it because the former president might end up hurting his case or opening himself up to more legal troubles given his penchant for telling lies, especially about the 2020 election.
