Donald Trump says Herschel Walker, the candidate he endorsed for Senate in Georgia will be weighed down by Gov. Brian Kemp if he’s on the ballot this November.
Trump made the comments during a tele-rally that was held on behalf of former Sen. David Perdue earlier this week. Trump has endorsed Perdue as he challenges Kemp for governor.
Trump soured on Kemp after he certified President Joe Biden’s win in the Peach State in the November 2020 presidential election.
“One of the problems also is if Brian Kemp gets in, I think it’s going to be very, very hard for Herschel Walker to win,” Trump said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Because I don’t believe Republicans are going to go out and vote for Brian Kemp. And if they’re not voting for Brian Kemp, they’re not going to be able to vote for Herschel Walker.”
Perdue, who is trailing Kemp in the polls even with Trump’s endorsement, echoed Trump’s comments during the rally.
“If we want that Senate race, we have to win this governor’s race,” he said.
Kemp will compete against Perdue in the GOP primary on May 24. The winner of that contest will likely face Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams, who narrowly lost to Kemp in 2018.
Walker is expected to easily win his GOP primary and face incumbent Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock this November.
