Donald Trump’s tax records are now in the hands of the Manhattan district attorney after the Supreme Court denied Trump’s efforts to keep his records private.
A spokesman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. confirmed that the office is in possession of the records after enforcing a subpoena against Trump’s longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA.
Attorneys for Trump have consistently argued that the subpoena issued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance was overbroad and issued in bad faith. The Supreme Court on Monday rebuffed their efforts to shield the documents. New York prosecutors obtained the documents hours after the Supreme Court issued its order.
Trump broke modern precedent by refusing to release his tax returns to the public as he ran for President, twice.
New York District Attorney Cy Vance is investigating whether Trump and the Trump Organization engaged in tax fraud, insurance fraud and other schemes to defraud, including potentially providing false information to financial institutions or banks about the value of certain buildings and assets, according to CNN.
The documents are subject to grand jury secrecy rules that restrict their public release. But sources told CNN that the documents contain Trump’s tax returns spanning from January 2011 to August 2019, as well as financial statements, engagement agreements, documents relating to the preparation and review of tax returns, and work papers and communications related to the tax returns.
