People close to Donald Trump want Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to be replaced in the Senate by anyone but Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).

Graham died Saturday night “from a brief and sudden illness,” his office said in a statement.

Hours after his death, Mace posted a video clip of Al Pacino as Michael Corleone from the film The Godfather Part III, declaring, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in,” which appeared to tease a potential run to replace the late senator.

However, members of Trump’s circle do not want her to succeed Graham, who was a close friend and ally of the president.

“POTUS wasn’t a fan already, but putting herself out as a candidate while everyone was absorbing the news of Lindsey’s death was in poor taste, even for Mace,” a Trump official told Axios.

“If Mace ends up in a runoff, we’ll drop $2 million on her head to keep her out,” said another top Trump official. “All we want is a Republican who is sane and can work with the White House.”

Mace recently suffered an embarrassing fifth-place defeat in the South Carolina gubernatorial primary in June after Trump endorsed the state’s lieutenant governor, Pamela Evette.

In response to Trump officials’ comments, Mace told Axios that she was being unfairly singled out, noting that Graham’s former primary opponent, Mark Lynch, and Republican Rep. Ralph Norman also had floated their names.

“Two men announced they were running to replace Lindsey Graham yesterday — within hours of his passing. I wasn’t one of them,” Mace said. “The pearl clutching by people afraid I will run hit a new high.”

In the race to replace Graham for the remainder of his term, Trump and some Republicans have thrown their support behind the late senator’s sister, Darlene Graham Nordone.

“I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!”

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott (R) also backed Nordone to take over her brother’s seat.

“Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, would be a fantastic pick to serve out the remainder of the senate term,” Scott wrote in a Twitter post. “After speaking with Darline, there is no one better who understands Lindsey’s love for family, our state, and our country.”
