CBS News fires ‘60 Minutes’ correspondent Scott Pelley.

CBS News fired veteran anchor Scott Pelley on Tuesday, just one day after his explosive meeting with 60 Minutes’ new executive producer, Nick Bilton.

“Yesterday, you hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt,” wrote Bilton. “Yesterday’s performative display of hostility enacted in front of the staff instead of in a civil, private conversation demonstrated that you have no interest in contributing to the future success of the show, or approaching my new tenure with a mind open to collaboration and progress.”

“Your antipathy to the future of the show has come through loud and clear. And I have heard you. I therefore write on behalf of CBS News to inform you that your employment with CBS is terminated for cause effective immediately,” Bilton wrote in a letter to Pelley.

On Monday, Pelley reportedly challenged Bilton as he introduced himself to staff, telling him that CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss was killing 60 Minutes.

Bilton, a documentary filmmaker and a former tech columnist at The New York Times, told staffers that Weiss “loves this institution,” according to NBC News. Pelley interrupted Bilton and pushed back, accusing Weiss of “murdering” the newsmagazine.

“She does not love this place,” Pelley told Bilton, according to the recording. “She was brought in to kill it, and she’s been doing exactly that.”
