Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley got her first win in the GOP presidential primary contest on Sunday, defeating Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.
Haley received nearly 63% of the vote and collected 19 delegates.
However, Trump still leads in overall delegates with 244 to Haley’s 43 . Trump will be looking expand his lead Tuesday when voters in 15 states head to the polls.
A candidate must win 1,215 delegates to secure the GOP nomination for president.
“It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos,” Haley spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas said in a statement.
The Trump campaign meanwhile dismissed Haley’s victory as a representation of the ‘swamp.’
“Tonight’s results in Washington D.C. reaffirm the object of President Trump’s campaign — he will drain the swamp and put America first,” Trump press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “The swamp has claimed their queen.”
