“Not the legitimate role of government”: Mitt Romney slams Ron Johnson’s investigation of Hunter Biden.

"Political exercise": Mitt Romney slams Ron Johnson's investigation of Hunter Biden.

Republican senator Mitt Romney slammed the investigation into Hunter Biden being led by his colleagues on the Senate Homeland Security Committee. Romney said the probe has the “earmarks of a political exercise” and it’s “not the legitimate role of government” to try and hurt a political opponent.

“The investigation from the outset had the earmarks of a political exercise,” Romney said at a committee meeting on Wednesday according to Axios. “I’m fearful that comments made in the media recently have only confirmed that perspective.”

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who is leading the investigation into Hunter Biden’s role on the board of Ukrainian gas company Burisma, told supporters on Monday that “in about a week we’re going to learn a whole lot more of Vice President Biden’s unfitness for office.”

“Obviously, it is the province of campaigns and political parties’ opposition research, the media, to carry out political endeavors, to learn about or dust-up one’s opponent,” Sen. Romney said. “But it’s not the legitimate role of government or Congress, or for taxpayer expense to be used in an effort to damage political opponents.”

Powerful words from the Utah senator and they would carry more weight if he didn’t turn around and voted with Republicans on Wednesday to authorize subpoenas targeting former Obama administration officials who played a role in the transition from the Obama to Trump administration.

Defending his vote to authorize the subpoenas on Obama administration alums, Romney said the probe could dodge “obvious political implications” by focusing on specific allegations alleged in a report by DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz, Axios reports.

Let’s also remember that he voted to issue a subpoena seeking records on Hunter Biden’s work in Ukraine in the initial stages of the investigation. His vote ensured that the subpoena would be issued.
