Donald Trump wants the United States to take control of the Strait of Hormuz and get paid for doing it.

In a phone interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” Trump said the United States will take on the role of  “guardian” of the Strait of Hormuz amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran.

“We’re going to keep the strait, and we’ll probably run it,” Trump said. “We’ll become the guardian of the strait. Maybe we’ll become the guardian angel of the strait, and we should be reimbursed for that.”

“When we do that we’re going to be reimbursed because the other nations are very wealthy, they’re on our side, and we can’t be expected to do that for nothing unlike we had for many years,” he continued. “We guarded the strait for 50 years, and we never got paid for it.We guarded it for nothing.”

Trump doubled down in a post on Truth Social, adding that he was reinstating the naval blockade.

The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran. We are reinstating the THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran’s ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait,” Trump wrote.

“The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as “THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World,” he continued. “The process and formation will begin immediately.”

Trump’s remarks come after overnight attacks by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on US military facilities in Gulf states, including facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan.

These Iranian attacks were a response to escalating tensions and recent U.S. military strikes against Iran.

U.S. Central Command (Centcom) announced Sunday that it “completed a new wave of offensive strikes against Iran” and struck “dozens of targets at multiple locations with precision munitions to degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking international shipping flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.”

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade. Iran does not control it,” Centcom said. “U.S. forces are postured and prepared to ensure that freedom of navigation remains available to commercial shipping despite Iran’s continued unwarranted aggression, harassment, threats, and arbitrary declarations.”

The IRGC fired back, saying, “The Strait of Hormuz is our territory, and we will not allow a rogue and child-killing army from the other side of the world to continue its illegal interference in it.”
