Trump’s pick for surgeon general killed her father in tragic gun accident as a child.

Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, Donald Trump’s nominee for surgeon general accidentally shot and killed her father when she was 13-years-old, according to a report from the New York Times.

Nesheiwat told police at the time that she went into her father’s bedroom to get a pair of scissors from his tackle box while he was sleeping. But she accidentally knocked it over in the dark room.

“Something fell out of it and there was a loud noise,” she told police. “I saw blood on my father’s ear.”

Police determined that her father’s .380 caliber handgun fell with the tackle box and discharged, shooting Nesheiwat’s father in the head.

The tragic accident was what led Nesheiwat to pursue a career in medicine, according to The Times

Nesheiwat is an emergency and family health doctor and Fox News medical contributor. She is currently the medical director at CityMD, a network of urgent care centers in New York and New Jersey.

Last month, Trump announced Nesheiwat as his choice for U.S. Surgeon General.

“Dr. Nesheiwat is a fierce advocate and strong communicator for preventive medicine and public health,” he said in a statement. “She is committed to ensuring that Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare, and believes in empowering individuals to take charge of their health to live longer, healthier lives.”
