Florida Democratic lawmaker switches to Republican Party.

A Florida Democratic lawmaker has switched her party affiliation after winning her seat as a Democrat.

State Rep. Hillary Cassel announced on Friday that she would be leaving the Democratic Party to join the Republican Party.

“As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism,” Cassel wrote in a post on X. “I’m constantly troubled by the inability of the current Democratic Party to relate to everyday Floridians.”

“I can no longer remain in a party that doesn’t represent my values,” she said.

Cassel said she recognizes she won’t agree with “every Republican” on “every detail,” but she knows that she “will always have input, collaboration, and respect.”

She also said the Florida Republican conference supports members finding “common-sense solutions” to the issues facing people and welcomes differing ideas and collaboration.

“I am announcing my decision to change my party affiliation from Democrat to Republican,” Cassel added. “This decision was not made lightly but comes from a deep sense of responsibility to my constituents and my commitment to the values that guide my service. I will be joining the Republican Conference of the Florida House of Representatives because I believe in their vision for a better, more prosperous Florida.”

Cassel is the second Democrat to leave the party this month after state Rep. Susan Valdés (R).
