Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), one of Donald Trump’s staunchest defenders on Capitol Hill, dodged a reporter’s request for comment on the former president’s controversial Truth Social post by claiming he can’t read without his glasses.
NBC News reporter Sahil Kapur said he asked Jordan what he thought about Trump’s post warning about “potential death & destruction” if he is indicted, but the congressman said he hadn’t seen it.
“When I showed this to him on my phone, he said he can’t read well without his glasses,” Kapur reported.
Trump is under investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office for alleged hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.
Trump falsely claimed last weekend that he would be arrested on Tuesday and called on his supporters to “protest”. Since then, he has attacked Bragg daily on his Truth Social website. He called Bragg an “animal” and posted an article showing a photo of himself with a baseball bat next to Bragg.
Amid concerns that he is once again inciting his supporters towards violence, similar to the lead-up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, the former president kicked things up a notch on Friday with his warning about “death & destruction” following his potential indictment. Later that day, a suspicious package with white powder addressed to ‘Alvin’ was discovered in Bragg’s office. Inside was a typewritten message that says, “Alvin: I am going to kill you!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
As Bragg’s investigation into Trump continues, House Republicans have jumped to the former president’s defense.
On Monday, three House Republican committee chairs, led by Jordan, sent a letter to Bragg demanding testimony and documents relating to the investigation and potential indictment of Trump.
Bragg rejected their requests in a statement on Thursday calling it “an unlawful incursion into New York’s sovereignty.”
Jordan told Kapur Friday that he was “reviewing’ Bragg’s response.
