House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) warned a gathering of Christians in Washington, D.C. on Friday that Congress will perform its oversight role of the Trump administration if Democrats flip the House in the November midterm elections.

Speaking at the annual Faith and Freedom Coalition conference, Johnson told the audience that if Democrats flip the House or Senate, impeachment will be the least of Trump’s worries.

“If we were to lose the midterms, heaven forbid, these Democrats — y’all, impeachment’s not even the big concern,” he said. “They will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body, and they will go after the president’s family, the cabinet, his donors and friends — half of you in this room will be targeted. I run the protection program. I’ll take care of you, okay? We’re gonna win! We’re gonna win the midterm.”

Republican majorities in Congress have routinely declined to engage in any oversight of the Trump administration. They have declined to investigate or hold hearings on allegations that Trump and his family have profited from his presidency despite a mountain of evidence. In fact, Republican lawmakers have either remained silent as Trump and his family monetized the presidency or defended these business operations after spending years investigating former President Joe Biden for allegedly profiting off the presidency as part of an impeachment inquiry.

Republicans have also ignored Trump and his cabinet’s blatant conflicts of interest and have actually blocked Democrats’ attempts to subpoena administration officials for crucial information.
